Silent Book Club

Silent Book Club is a global community of readers and introverts, gathering together to read in quiet camaraderie.

Debuting in September 2023, Dorothy began their own chapter of Silent Book Club to massive popularity. Curated by Charlie Schumann, Dorothy holds space for our readers on the second Sunday of each month from 6pm - 10pm. This free event extends all night and we keep our lights a little brighter and our music 100% instrumental to help with a cozier atmosphere conducive to reading. We do encourage anyone to bring reading lights for extra illumination as needed.

Dorothy also hosts a donation based queer bookshelf which encourages anyone to leave, take and return queer reads for anyone to peruse, borrow, read and return. This remains active all nights that we are open, so make sure to stop by and browse every time you visit.

Host & Curator: Charlie Schumann

Charlie is a writer, bookseller, and pop culture enthusiast who lives in Logan Square with their (cool as fuck) fiancé, Beth and (demonic) cat, JJ Peppers Convenience Store. A Chicago native, Charlie knows there’s no place like (or better than) home. When they’re not in the photo booth at Dorothy or FaceTiming their friends to talk about fanfiction, they like to go out for Italian ice, visit the garlic couple at the farmers market, and howl at the moon. @moonyagedaydream

Book Recommendations

While Silent Book Club is all about you do you, boo - we do still love to suggest queer reads in case you need some inspiration. Each quarter Charlie curates three book suggestions per month which you can read - or not! These book reccs are also linked in our Bookshop.org page and if you purchase a book through our link, your purchase directly benefits Semicolon, Chicago’s only Black woman owned bookstore & gallery.
